Hello and welcome to my channel. Today, you will see two sorting activities that promote pre-mathematical skills.
You are watching my 4-year-old who really loves doing these tasks. She is now in a period when she loves to create an order. She likes to put things in their place and loves to sort anything I ask her to.
This is a straw sorting game. This activity is very easy to prepare. All you need is to have some straws, scissors a marker and a ruler.
I have cut straws into 5 different lengths with at least 1 cm difference in length. There will 5 straws in each group.
The child is simply grouping them by size and then, she will sort them in a line starting with the shortest ones on the left to the longest ones on the right. She will leave some space between the groups.
If this is the first time your child does something like that, ask them to first find the group with the shortest straws.
Then ask them to find the straws that are just a little bit longer and to put them next to the group with the smallest straws and so on. And when there is only one group left, ask them to place the longest straws in the line.
This way, your child will learn the meaning of words the shortest, longer and the longest.
The second and the last activity for today is paper clip sorting. She will first sort them by colour. There is one yellow paper clip, 2 green, 3 white, 4 red, 5 pink and 6 blue paper clips.
So, you probably already know what is the second part of this activity.
She will count each group of paper clips and sort them by quantity from 1 to five paper clips in a group.
