At the age of twelve Joel landed in the good graces of Donald Takayama and “all things” his world had to offer. This was a schooling in design and history from the generations preexisting Joel's birth. He was blessed to be given the opportunity to study under Donald (a term used all too loosely these days) who he believes to be the greatest longboard shaper of our time.

Joel's esteemed and influential career started when he became a professional surfer at 14 and won his first professional ASP competition at age 15, making him the youngest competitor to win an ASP event. In 1998 he won his first ASP Longboard World Championship in the Canary Islands. He won the U.S. Open of longboarding 8 times, and won the ASP Longboard World Championship for the second time in 2004.
he is featured in surf films such as The Seedling, Sprout, and The Present, 16mm films by Thomas Campbell. Tudor also features in a large number of other surf films including Longer, One California Day and Riding Waves.

He founded The Duct Tape Invitational longboard surfing championships. The Duct Tape Invitational pays homage to the history of surfing by requiring competitors to use boards of at least nine feet.

“Kids need to try to it all,” Tudor added. “They need to ride everything and have a bigger perspective of what surfing is about. Try it all! My hopes are a future generation of surfers that love longboarding just as much, if not more, than short boarding. I'm stoked to create something for the next generation beyond just my career. It’s nice to know there’s another platform for these guys to perform, and we’ve been able to create it".
