The bindings on a guitar body are both functional and decorative. First, they protect the top and back woods if there is any damage to the finish. This layer of protection reduces the chance of the wood cracking.
Bindings--the main strip of wood or plastic--and purflings--the thin lines attached to the bindings--are also decorative and help set one guitar apart from another while highlighting the beauty of the instrument.
In this video, I describe how the binding/purfling is fabricated, then I attach the bent pieces to the archtop guitar body using wood glue and masking tape. The binding wood I chose for this project is Satinwood, the purfling lines are maple and black-dyed holly veneer.
