*Remembering Bency and Benson: Symbols of Resilience and Hope*
Bency and her younger brother Benson, born to HIV-positive parents, faced severe ostracization in Kollam, Kerala. Following the death of their parents, they were cared for by their grandfather, Geevarghese Johnny. However, their HIV-positive status led to widespread societal rejection, with schools refusing to admit them.
When a local primary school initially enrolled the siblings, it soon expelled them under pressure from parents and community members who falsely believed the children posed a health risk. Despite medical experts and social workers clarifying there was no danger of transmission, fear and ignorance persisted.
With no other options, their grandfather led them in a protest outside the state secretariat. This action prompted then-Chief Minister A. K. Antony to intervene, ordering their re-admission. However, continued community pressure resulted in the school nearly shutting down, forcing authorities to arrange education at home for the children.
Figures like Very Rev. K. Y. Jacob, Father Johnny Thottam, and healthcare advocates highlighted the case as a glaring example of stigma against HIV-positive individuals, even in Kerala, a state known for its high literacy.
Bency and Benson’s story underscores the urgent need to combat misinformation and promote compassion in society.
