Known as the Triborough Bridge until 2008, the RFK Bridge (Interstate 278) opened on July 11, 1936 as one of the largest public works projects undertaken during the Great Depression. All together, the bridge is actually a series of three bridges that connect the boroughs of Queens, Manhattan, and Bronx, as well as the 14 miles of approach roads and viaducts that connect each of the three bridges together. The spans cross the East River.
