Scientists use Newton's law of gravitation and the acceleration due to gravity to find the mass of the Earth. By comparing the force formula ([ F = G \frac{Mm}{r^2} ]) with the weight formula ([ F = mg ]), and knowing values for the gravitational constant ([G]), Earth's radius ([r]), and surface gravity ([g]), the mass of Earth can be calculated as [ M = \frac{g r^2}{G} ]. Plugging in these constants gives Earth's mass as about [ 5.97 \times 10^{24} ] kg.
