In May 2025, researchers from the DEM COMM programme at NIHR ARC GM and NIHR ARC North West Coast joined forces to host the Understanding Dementia: A South Asian Community Festival at the British Muslim Heritage Centre in Whalley Range, Manchester.
The event brought together dementia researchers from the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool, colleagues from the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH), and Sahara, a dementia service for South Asian communities established in 2022 by the Alzheimer’s Society Greater Manchester.
The aim was to create a space for genuine knowledge exchange between the South Asian community and experts in dementia research, health and social care. By doing so, the event promoted closer working relationships and stronger networks to better support people from this community.
