Why Jacob Rees-Mogg is 'surprised' at Robert Jenrick's sacking

Former leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg has told Sky News he was "surprised" when he learned of Robert Jenrick's sacking.

Earlier, Kemi Badenoch confirmed Mr Jenrick was sacked from the shadow cabinet, had the whip removed and had his party membership suspended.

She said: "I was presented with clear, irrefutable evidence that he was plotting in secret to defect in a way designed to be as damaging as possible to his shadow cabinet colleagues and the wider Conservative Party."
