This piece is inspired by romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and attempts to explore some perspectives towards present-day faith traditions, featuring water as a sonic centerpiece.
Text:
And thus do I speak of a mariner,
Who shot dead a holy bird,
And a sin descendeth upon his men.*
All in a hot and copper sky,
The bloody Sun, at noon,
Right up above the mast did stand,
No bigger than the Moon.
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship,
Upon a painted ocean.
Water, water, every where,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink.
-- Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, with the first stanza written by the composer.
*Opening melody drawn from Medieval Santiago Chant 'Mariam Matrem Virginem'
