In the 19th century, Évariste Galois made a breakthrough by linking group structures to the solvability of equations, laying the foundation of modern group theory. Later, mathematicians such as Cayley, Cauchy, and Sylow formalized abstract groups and their properties. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, group theory became a central field in mathematics with applications across science.
