John Norman Collins was a serial killer active in Michigan between 1967 and 1969. His victims were primarily young women, many of them college students from the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University in the Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor areas.

Collins used charm and familiarity to gain his victims’ trust, often posing as a student or friendly acquaintance. Once alone with them, he brutally assaulted and murdered them. The victims were typically found stabbed, strangled, or beaten, with bodies left in rural areas, abandoned buildings, or wooded locations across southeastern Michigan.

At least seven murders were officially linked to Collins, though investigators believe the true number may be higher. The killings spread fear throughout college communities, leading to curfews, safety escorts, and heightened police presence. The media coverage was intense, marking one of the first times a serial killer case deeply affected a modern college town.

Collins was arrested in 1969 after physical evidence—including fibers and eyewitness accounts—connected him to the murder of Karen Sue Beineman, a University of Michigan student. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, where he remains incarcerated.

The case remains infamous due to its impact on campus safety, its brutality, and the unsettling fact that Collins appeared outwardly ordinary—highlighting how predators can hide in plain sight.
