The electrification and winter starts at 37:03.
In February 2008 REOS visited the Montzen line in Belgium
between the Gemmenicher tunnel and the bridge at Moresnet.
This 7km long section of the line is famous for using diesel
locomotives which have the impressive task of hauling heavy
freight trains from the Montzen yard uphill to the German
border. The Montzen line, which is known as Line 25, in Belgium
connects Antwerp with Aachen West and is a freight only line.
When recorded in 2008 there was almost no sign of the
forthcoming changes to the landscape and motive power that will
result from the electrification of the line. The only work being
carried out was at the small bridge at the village of Gemmenich.
We can enjoy the sound of diesel locomotives, including Class 55,
Class 66 and BR 225, at several locations between the tunnel and
the bridge. The bridge crossing the Geul river valley was
originally built in 1916 and following refurbishment in 2005 is now
in good condition.
We returned to this part of Line 25 in December 2010 during
very wintery conditions. The diesel engines have been replaced
by the Traxx BR 186, in Belgium known as the HLE 28. Only the
class 66 diesels have survived the electrification.
We only use original sound recordings, without any additional
music or commentary.
