What is liquidity? It's how much volume a stock has, how much action. This term is vital when it comes to trading stocks.

If you’ve read my book, “An American Hedge Fund,” you know about my $500,000 loss. I took a big position on an illiquid stock. It didn't matter that I wanted to get out. There were no buyers. Here’s how you can learn from my big loss.

These days I take very small positions. I trade safely.

My huge loss was an illiquid stock. I had hundreds of thousands of shares that I wanted to sell, but the stock wasn't trading. You don't want to have this giant position and get stuck in it.

The cool thing about trading with a small account is you can usually get in and out pretty quickly. A lot of big traders and investors can’t always do that.

A lot of these penny stocks can have great stories and seemingly amazing products. But if no one's trading the stock, stay away.

I think there can be so much opportunity with low-priced stocks ... IF you're trading active stocks. Do your research. Check the chart and the volume. Make a trading plan and stick to it. Take a piece of the action along the way.

For me, I like taking small positions so that I can get in and out. My sweet spot is usually around a few million shares traded per day. That's the liquidity level that I like. As you trade more, you’ll gain more experience. You’ll learn what you like, and it might not be the same as what I like. We're all different.

Find the liquidity level that you're most comfortable with. For me, I stay away from the truly illiquid stocks and focus on volatile stocks.
