Żołtarz Jezusów - Polish Renaissance Song

Vielle by Anna Vasylchenko, vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is a Polish piece of music dated to the transition between the Middle-Ages and the early modern era, most probably from around 1488. It is a retelling of the story of the Passion in the form of a musical ballad.

The arrangement showcases the musical realities of Polish music at the onset of the Renaissance: as a Catholic country, it was one of the early adopters in Central and Eastern Europe of the Western European developments in four part polyphony and harmony, with independent melodic lines harmonising with one another using the nascent principles of tonal music theory. The instruments used are the lute and the vielle, an instrument still used as the time, but showing signs of decline as it would slowly disappear to be replaced but other bowed instruments like early violins and the viola de gamba.

Bog Ociec Syna wydal na zbawienie duszne.
Jezus kiedy wieczerzał, swe ciało rozdawał,
Apostoły swe smętne swoją krwią napawał.

Jezus Oćcu sie modlił za swe krzyżowniki,
Smętną Matkę ucieszył, łotra i grzeszniki;
"Pragnę grzesznych zbawienia, duszo moja miła,
Już Oćcu polecaję" - wołał wszytką siłą.

Jezusa umarłego stworzenie płakało,
Pana swego miłego barzo żałowało;
Słojnce się zacimiło, ziemia barzo drżała;
