The characteristic shape of the tang seen in famous short swords of the mid-Kamakura period
Tantō (short sword), Mumei (unsigned), Norishige (Important Cultural Property)
The mid-Kamakura period is called the golden age of Japanese swords. Externally, there were two major events that shook the nation's very existence - the Mongol invasions. The spirit of the samurai who wielded the swords, as well as the swordsmiths who forged them, reached their highest levels during this era. Against this historical backdrop, master craftsmen such as Awataguchi Fujiwara Yoshimitsu, Kikunori Toshi, Kikunori Mitsunori, Shinto Gonokunitoshi, Nagafune Naobitsu, Kaneko, Ōshū Yukimitusu, Masamune, and Norishige produced many renowned swords that have become legendary in sword history.
In this video, we will take an in-depth look at the distinctive shapes, or "tsukurikomi," of the short swords (tantō) produced by these master swordsmiths during the golden age of Japanese swords.
What was the reason behind the creation of the widely curved tangs, known as "fukubi-tsuki," that are commonly seen in many of these masterpieces? Ginza Choshuya, a specialty Japanese sword shop, will utilize existing short swords, as well as mountings that clearly show the Kamakura-period form, to investigate the purpose behind the "curved tangs = fukubi-tsuki."
There is no doubt that the insights gained will shed light on another crucial aspect, the "origin" and "core" of the Japanese sword - an art form that has been passed down over the course of a millennium to the present day.
