Larry Bird’s first game was Friday, October 12, 1979. He only played 28 minutes but had 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.
In June, Gerald Henderson, who had been drafted by the San Antonio Spurs but saw his draft rights renounced in August, also recorded his first points in the NBA for the Celtics.
Future head coach Chris Ford hit the first-ever three-pointer in NBA history.
