In Parshat VaEra, the confrontation between Moshe and Pharaoh begins not with the plagues but with the staff turning into a snake, revealing the spiritual root of Egypt. Egypt represents the chambers of exchanges, a realm where holiness is trapped through sadness, confusion, and falsehood. The snake symbolizes atzvut—unhappiness with one’s portion—while Moshe’s staff, engraved with the ten plagues, represents simcha and the ten types of melody that activate rectification. When Moshe and Aharon’s staff swallows all the Egyptian snakes, it demonstrates that true joy rooted in holiness can overpower sorrow and illusion at their source. This teaches that redemption—both from Egypt and from our personal exiles—comes specifically through simcha, the power that extracts holiness from darkness and leads us toward freedom.
