Weraiti is a tapu maunga with burial caves holding koi iwi of Ngāti Hinerangi tupuna in the Kaimai Ranges. Confiscated by the Crown after the Waikato Land Wars 150 years ago, it is now owned by J.Swap Matamata Metal Suppliers, who want to expand their quarry there, challenging QEII National Trust's covenant on the bush surrounding the area. Casey and Rosemeri Douglas, Evelyn Brightwell, and Te Ao o Te Rangi (Lance) Apaapa, mana whenua from Tangata Marae, along with Paul Kirby, QEII National Trust, want the land conserved as the urupā is at risk of erosion. The quarry has diverted the Mangapiko Stream without consultation, but Brent Sinclair from Waikato Regional Council says the company is complying with its obligations. This story first aired on 8/7/2018.
