Welcome to another episode of North Coast History and Haunts. Today's episode takes us to Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio where we visit the Haserot Angel or "The Angel of Death Victorious". The impressive memorial is cast in bronze and sits on a granite base. It was created in 1923 by Danish born artist Herman Matzen in memorial for the wife of Francis Henry Haserot whose family owned a successful food distribution concern in Cleveland, Ohio. Francis Haserot (1860-1953) was among Cleveland's wealthy businessmen at the turn of the century and is buried here along with his wife and four children.
It is among the most popular graves at Lakeview Cemetery. People reported feeling strong emotions when visiting this impressive sculpture. It appears to be weeping or crying due to the aging of the bronze specially around the eyes. Its gender remains in question and adds to the mystique. The torch is held upside down extinguishing the flame of life.
