In this launch episode of The D.E.P with Ongama Mtimka, Kevin Wakeford takes me down memory lane, sharing stories of his upbringing and how it relates to broader developments in South Africa. He tells me he grew up poor and I ask him to explain that since "the poor white problem" had been dealt with back in the 60's. His story of how he saved his salary for a year to buy himself a car and pay for his first year of university will inspire many. He tells me the National Party and business people in the Western Cape conspired to marginalise the Eastern Cape by shifting plans to build a port at Coega to Saldanha for exporting iron ore from Sishen. Further, Kevin tells me that black people contribute the most to pension funds but the allocation of capital remains dominated by white fund and asset managers, perpetuating inequality in capital allocation. By the way, he shares that his friend Theo Qabaka taught him maths while they were at two different primary schools but met on weekends. Because his friends was black, Kevin was called K-word Wakeford and when he plays rugby the spectators would cheer "Go k-word go" (silenced in the video).
