France biggest landfill – first tests for excavation

For the past 70 years, these cliffs located near Le Havre have eroded into the sea, slowly releasing 13000 truckloads household and industrial waste.

For the past decade, Surfrider and local partners have asked for excavation, those works start today.

The City of Le Havre invited us to visit the test worksite, which is installed at the foot of the Dollemard landfill. 

This site is there to take samples and see if it is possible to sort the waste on-site to define the quantities of material to be removed and treated. 

We have really seen a whole system put in place which seems efficient enough to distinguish inert matter from polluting matter. 

Hopefully, next year a decision will be taken on the method to treat the landfill of Dollemard.
