Parking in a layby for 2 cars at Castley on a minor road approx 5 miles from Tebay.
The route is 7.5 miles in length and heads up through Castley, a tiny hamlet of 2 buildings to head up into the valley of Calf Beck. The Beck has to be forded but should be OK after heavy rain.An ATV track is followed onto White Fell, heading for the Yorkshire Dales Park and the Ridge to The Calf, the highest summit of The Howgill fells at 676m. The Ridge is then followed to Bush Howe (623m) and Fellhead 640m to descend through Beck HouseFarm and back to Howgill Lane. Their is a glamping site with an honesty shop.
The Howgills are remote and peaceful and AW called them 'The Sleeping Elephant's' as they have big domed summits with steep sides and many gills cutting through the landscape. They offer uninterrupted walking as there are no walls or fences , just miles of open space.
