In this unique episode of Crime Stories, ex-Blood gang leader Shanduke McPhatter meets former corrections officer Steven Dominguez to explore their experiences on opposing sides of the notorious Rikers Island Prison.
Rikers Island complex, based in New York City, is considered the most notorious jail in America. Housing thousands of prisoners who are yet to be convicted of a crime, Rikers is a breeding ground for violence and gangs. There are ongoing calls to close Rikers Island due to poor conditions and inmate safety.
Shanduke first went to Rikers as a 16-year-old and was recruited into the East Coast Bloods. Here he meets Steven, a former corrections officer who was corrupted by a fellow inmate and began bringing contraband drugs into Rikers Island. They discuss the inception of the Bloods, prison violence and the often tense relationship between inmates and guards.
