We cycled down to Elizabeth Gaskell's House!

Welcome back to Blooms & Bicycles everyone! 🌸

On the cusp of blossom season, the month of the matriarchs becomes the perfect time to hop on the saddle for a bicycle adventure to the Manchester home of the world famous female author, Elizabeth Gaskell, to celebrate both International Women's Day and Mother's Day, just as much as World Book Day.

During our chat with Museum Director Sally Jastrzebski-Lloyd, we learned all about how Elizabeth juggled life as a wife and mother to four children, with her career as a writer.

Set up as a hands-on type museum, the dedicated team of volunteers, who between them have such an interesting wealth of knowledge about the family and Manchester’s history, have recreated the Gaskell’s family home, based on painstaking research of old records, letter archives and local history to piece together everything about how Elizabeth decorated the interior of the house and what flowers she grew in the gardens.

With friends including the other famous authors Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, and Beatrix Potter, when you wander through the corridors of this house, you can’t help but wonder what kind of conversations were held with these people, and what secrets the walls still keep…

So marking the month of these three wonderful dates during a month that see Mother Nature burst back into life, we are delighted to bring to you the most interesting interview and exploration of the house, which shares how ahead of her time Elizabeth was when it came to championing for gender and class equality through her storylines that continue to grip readers across the world more and more.
