“What I’m most passionate about, much, much more than all the rest in my profession—is the portrait, the modern portrait,” Vincent van Gogh wrote in June 1890. During his stay in the south of France (1888–89), this enthusiasm had resulted in an astonishing series of portraits of his cherished friends, the Roulin family.
