This piece, one of my favourite pieces of music from all of Rachmaninoff's piano output, is the closest piece of this composer we will ever get to Modernism, and the main reason behind this is that the inspiration of the whole set of etudes were Prokofiev and Scriabin, where only in the fifth etude there is a comeback of his old lyrical style which is seen through his preludes and the first three piano concertos.
