Nestled in the French Alps, Méribel Altiport offers one of Europe’s most striking aviation backdrops. This first part captures the majestic alpine aviation scenes — aircraft movements, mountain atmosphere, and the unique character of this high‑altitude airfield.
Opened in 1962, Méribel Altiport (IATA: MFX, ICAO: LFKX) sits at an elevation of 1,717 m (5,633 ft) above sea level in Les Allues, Savoie. Its single paved runway (15/33) measures 406 m (1,332 ft) and is built on a steep slope, requiring aircraft to land uphill and take off downhill — a defining characteristic of altiports.
The airport was inaugurated by Joseph Szydlowski, president of Turboméca, and named Altiport Robert Merloz in honor of a pioneering aviator. It is primarily used for light aviation, helicopter operations, and tourism flights, serving as a gateway to the Méribel ski resort and the wider Trois Vallées area.
Beyond aviation, the altiport integrates into the alpine lifestyle: in winter, it connects directly to ski slopes such as the Lapin piste, while in summer, the surrounding greens host Méribel’s golf course. Its dual role as both an aviation hub and recreational landmark makes it a unique destination in the Alps.
