Just as Hurricane Norbert was dumping its last rain upon Arizona, the National Weather Service was already talking about another tropical system forming south of the Baja Peninsula in the eastern Pacific. It soon became the named storm Odile. It made landfall on the Baja Peninsula as a category 3 hurricane, after briefly making it to category 4 status.
It was projected to track into Southern Arizona, just west of Tucson - all projections but one that had Odile tracking to the east of Tucson. The westerly track seemed to be "on track" as late as Wednesday morning, the 17th, when its path took a more south-easterly route. My location received only a trace amount of rain and we received none of the 2-4 inches of rain forecast. Locations to the east of Tucson got that rain, and a visit from Odile. Tucsonans could only wave as it passed by.
Total rainfall for Houghton and the Pantano Wash near my location from Odile - .16 inches. Much ado about nothing. But that is often how difficult predicting these special monsoon events can be.
A newly named tropical system looms on the horizon. As of late Wednesday the 17th, Polo was a category 1 hurricane but the forecasted track would take it to the west of the Baja Peninsula and out over the Pacific Ocean.
