1,6 'Personent Hodie' (Finnish, 1582)

Let resound today
the voices of children,
joyfully praising
Him who is born to us,
given by most high God,
and conceived in a virginal womb.

He was born into the world,
wrapped in swaddling clothes,
and laid in a manger
in a stable for animals,
the master of the heavens.
The prince of Hell has lost his spoils.

Three Magi came,
they were bearing gifts,
and sought the little one,
following a star,
to worship him,
and offer him gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Let all the junior clerics
and also the boys
sing like angels:
"You have come to the world,
I pour out praises to you.
Therefore, glory to God in the highest!"

2,5 'Noel Nouvelet' (French, 15th C.)

Let us sing Noel, let us sing Noel here!
Pious people, let us cry to God for mercy!
Let us sing Noel for the new little King!
Noël nouvelet, Noël chantons ici.

When I woke up, and had slept enough,
I opened my eyes and saw a tree in flower
From which there emerged a little red bud.
Noël, etc.

When I saw it, my heart rejoiced,
For a great light shown from it
Like the sun that shines in the early morning.
Noël, etc.

Willie, bring your little drum,
Robin take your flute and come!
When we hear the music bright
we will sing Noel this night,
When we hear the fife and drum,
Christmas should be frolicsome.

Thus the men of olden days
for the King of Kings to praise,
When they heard the fife and drum,
tu-re-lu-re-lu, pat-a-pat-a-pan,
When they hear the fife and drum,
sure, our children won't be dumb.

This day the devil is vanquished:
Let us render thanks to Jesus!
On the sound of the instruments,
