SUVs have taken a bite out of traditional passenger-car sales across the board in recent years, but the subcompact car category has been hit especially hard. The class has dwindled to just two entries: the Mitsubishi Mirage (which comes as a hatchback and G4 sedan) and the Nissan
Versa sedan.
Senior Research Editor Damon Bell tested the Versa in its top-line (but still very affordable) SR trim level and found it to be a respectably pleasant and well-equipped vehicle for the money. Even with a handful of options, our test vehicle was comfortably less than $23,000 — that’s roughly the starting price of a base-model subcompact SUV or compact car that isn’t as generously equipped.
Even though new-car shoppers are pivoting toward value-priced options as the average transaction price of a new vehicle remains above $47,000, the Versa’s sales haven’t been robust — in fact, both the Versa and the Mirage are reportedly slated to be discontinued after the 2025 model year. If that’s the case, the entry-level price of a new vehicle will certainly rise by at least a couple thousand dollars. If you’re a true penny-pincher, make sure you check out the full video review to see if the Versa is right for you.
