Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves. These are the nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord that control muscle movement and sensation.
GBS usually starts suddenly, often after a minor infection, and can progress quickly. While some cases are mild, others may become life-threatening if not treated in time.
Types of GBS
There are different forms, including:
AIDP (Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy): Most common form, causes muscle weakness starting from the legs.
Miller Fisher Syndrome: Rare type, affects eye muscles, balance, and reflexes.
Treatment of GBS
Though serious, GBS is treatable, and many patients recover completely with proper medical and rehabilitation care.
Medical Treatment:
Hospitalization & Monitoring: As GBS can worsen quickly.
IV Immunoglobulin (IVIG): Helps block the immune system attack on nerves.
Plasma Exchange (Plasmapheresis): Removes harmful antibodies from the blood.
Ventilator Support: In severe cases with breathing difficulty.
Rehabilitation Treatment (Very Important):
Physiotherapy: To regain muscle strength, coordination, and movement.
Occupational Therapy: To restore daily activity skills.
Speech Therapy: If swallowing or speaking muscles are affected.
Nutritional Support & Nursing Care.
