IRPCS International Regulations For Preventing Collisions at Sea

The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS), also known as the COLREGs, are a set of rules that govern the behavior of vessels on the water. The rules are designed to prevent collisions and ensure the safety of all vessels and their crews. The IRPCS apply to all vessels, from small pleasure craft to large commercial ships, in international waters.

The IRPCS cover a wide range of topics, including:

Navigation lights and shapes: The IRPCS specify the lights and shapes that vessels must display to indicate their position, direction of travel, and status.

Sound signals: The IRPCS specify the sound signals that vessels must use to communicate with each other, especially in restricted visibility conditions.

The IRPCS establish a hierarchy of vessels based on their maneuverability and purpose, and specify which vessels have the right of way in various situations.

Rules of conduct: The IRPCS specify how vessels should behave in different situations, such as when overtaking, meeting head-on, or crossing paths.

Collision avoidance: The IRPCS provide guidelines for avoiding collisions, including keeping a proper lookout, taking early and decisive action, and communicating clearly with other vessels.
