In the 16th century, Martin Luther and artist Lucas Cranach waged a devastating war of images and words against the Pope. Using the new media of the age--the printing press--they mass produced woodcut images and written pamphlets meant to sway public opinion and sully the holy image of the papacy. Their war launched not only the Protestant Reformation, but also demonstrated the power of mass media and visual propaganda.
