BJP Government trying to erase Manipur’s history? - O Joy
Senior Congress leader Okram Joy Singh has strongly criticized the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Manipur, questioning whether they are “trying to erase Manipur’s history.”
His remarks came after the demolition of Shillong’s iconic Redlands Building, also known as the Manipuri Rajbari, which has sparked widespread outrage in both Manipur and Meghalaya. The heritage structure holds immense historical value as the site where the Manipur Merger Agreement was signed on September 21, 1949, between Maharaja Bodhachandra and representatives of the Government of India, marking Manipur’s merger into the Indian Union in October 1949.
The timing of the demolition has drawn further attention, coinciding with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s visit to Imphal. Sangma, who also serves as the National People’s Party (NPP) president, denied any involvement, asserting that no permission was granted by the Meghalaya government for the demolition.
