BERNARD MOUNTAIN TRAIL is on Western Mountain, the local name for Bernard & Mansell Mountains along w/Knight Nubble on the west side of Mount Desert Island.
Hikers more used to the manicured east side of MDI & their own local state park trails may find the hikes here less enjoyable & more challenging.

From Great Notch, the hike begins where an option to take GREAT NOTCH TRAIL down is available. Climb a steepening slope where tree root wrapped granite juts & granite ledges that will appear throughout the hike are quickly encountered. The exposure & drop from the first ledge w/no iron rungs to assist foreshadows the challenge of this trail.

The trail alternates between steep climbing & brief rest on more level paths & passes the overlook of Southwest Harbor before arriving atop Knight Nubble. No sign marks this high point, the steep downclimb on uneven granite to Little Notch lets one know that they were up there.

Here, SLUICEWAY TRAIL offers a mile shorter escape w/o further climbing. For those who press onward, the climb to Bernard Mtn Summit begins. Once more, root covered juts & ledges give uncertain footing requiring 3 point of contact climbing for safety. An overlook of Mt Desert Narrows gives a limited view to the north before arrival at the summit.

The descent off the summit starts on granite paths, passing by iron remnants that may once have affixed a structure to granite. Short ups & downs lead to a final steeper drop. Suddenly the efforts on this hike feel like chapters of a bedtime story! A brown pine path winds through evenly spaced trees set against a forest floor of green moss and fallen limbs. A more magical place my not exist.

This grove slowly fades to the arrival at WEST LEDGE TRAIL. The trail then descends 1 mile over root covered & loose stone paths crossed by multiple small mountain runoffs. This storybook hike ends arriving at Mill Field.

Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia...
your hiking plan can include them as contingencies.
