Manto Tussock Moth Dasychira manto is found in Southeastern United States: Maryland south to Florida, west to Kentucky, Texas.
The Manto tussock moth flies from April to October, producing 2–3 broods. The moth lays eggs on cocoons.
The caterpillars feed and grow for 4–6 weeks. Younger larvae skeletonize leaves, while older larvae eat entire leaves.
The caterpillars pupate for about two weeks, in early to mid April.
Male moths emerge and fly to the wingless females from mid April to early.
The females lay eggs on their cocoons.
Depending on the species, the eggs may hatch a few weeks later and produce another generation, or there may be no further activity until the following spring.
Tussock moth larvae can be a nuisance when they wander to find a place to pupate. They feed on trees and shrubs by chewing through their leaves or branches.
