The eastern anchor span of the old Tappan Zee Bridge was brought down in a controlled explosion on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at 10:52 a.m., destroying the steel support pillars at each end of the 672-foot (205-meter) section. Engineers had originally planned the demolition for January 12, but high winds delayed the event to the 15th.
