On the bench today is a Matchbox 1971 MGB GT Coupe.

According to Wiki, the MGB is a two-door sports car manufactured and marketed from 1962 until 1980 by the British Motor Corporation (BMC), later the Austin-Morris division of British Leyland, as a four-cylinder, soft-top sports car. The fixed-roof MGB GT three-door 2+2 coupe was introduced in October 1965. Production continued until 1980, although export to the US ceased in 1974. The MGB GT was designed by Pininfarina and launched the sporty "hatchback" style by combining the sloping rear window with the rear deck lid, thereby offering the utility of a station wagon while retaining the style and shape of a coupe.

In 2019, Road & Track magazine named the MGB GT one of "16 of Pininfarina's Most Beautiful Designs That Aren't Ferraris.”

SCCA ProRally was an American rally racing series, run by the Sports Car Club of America from 1973 until 2004.

This build is an homage to Phil and Dallas Smith, whose story I discovered while researching this build. They’re an MGB GT Coupe rally car team, competing mostly in SCCA events.

In the late 80s, they bought a 1966 MGB to take a road camping trip in. They got interested in MGs, sports cars, and car club events. Ultimately, they cobbled together a junkyard body shell with a donor '68 MGB GT, and a ProRally car was on the road. The Rally Rhybudd Racing Team was created.

The Smiths encourage the return to stage rallying of vintage rally cars. “With few exceptions,” they explain, “vintage cars are not likely to offer serious competition to modern rally cars, but do provide the same challenges and enjoyment.” Their message to potential sponsors is, “No, we aren't likely to win, but our machine is unique in a field of modern jellybean designs. It never fails to attract the spectators' attention. After all, EVERYBODY either owned an MG or wish they had.”
