The Carpathians are a "subsystem" of the Alps-Himalaya System, and are forming an arc throughout Central and Eastern Europe. The Carpathians are divided into three major regions: Western Carpathians, Eastern Carpathians, and Southern Carpathians. The Carpathians, stretching from the Czech Republic in the west along the border of Poland with Slovakia up to Ukraine in the east are known as The Beskids. Gerlachovský štít is the highest peak in the Carpathians, and there are 10 peaks over 2600 m high, all of them in the High Tatra Mountains.
