There are 19 different cities and towns in Massachusetts that end in the suffix H-A-M. All told, the “ham” towns make up 5% of all Bay State municipalities. In this episode we explore how that came to be, with an assist from Merriam-Webster Dictionary editor-at-large Peter Sokolowski. For further insight, we touch base with Boston University linguist Charles B. Chang who gives us a primer on how to know when to pronounce a town with a “ham” like Framingham, or an “um” like Dedham.
