On Tuesday, an International Ozone Layer Protection Day program was organized under the leadership of Headmistress Sukanya Madam at the Government High School, Gundumala, Madakasira Mandal.
Speaking on the occasion, the Headmistress said that the ozone layer is a protective shield that blocks harmful ultraviolet rays from reaching the earth from the sun. Therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to protect the ozone layer. She explained the dangers and damage caused by the formation of holes in the ozone layer.
She further stated that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) released from refrigerators and air conditioners used in our homes are a major cause of ozone layer depletion, and urged everyone to use them as little as possible.
She emphasized that to pass on the heritage of our living world to future generations, protecting nature is essential. Following the principle of "Live and Let Live," she said that nature conservation is the responsibility of all nations.
She informed that due to the harmful effects of ozone layer depletion, an international treaty was signed to control the release of pollutants that damage the ozone layer. This treaty, known as the Montreal Protocol, was adopted in 1987 in Montreal, Canada, and came into force in 1989. Later, developed and developing countries were given separate guidelines and measures to phase out CFCs and reduce ozone depletion.
As part of the program, essay writing competitions were held for students on International Ozone Layer Protection Day, and the winners were congratulated and given prizes.
NGC Coordinator Chandramohan Reddy, the teaching staff, students, and others participated in the program.
