My first ever trip with Tesla's Full Self Driving feature. Follow along as I go from start to finish. Everything you see here is something I'm doing for the first time....You'll see Tesla's impressive mobile app and in-car software activation where I go from initially redeeming 3 months of FSD in my Tesla app, all the way through my first hour+ trip in FSD.
This is a 2022 Tesla Model X Plaid with FSD Hardware 3, running FSD version 11.4.9
Verdict: I am super impressed after my first drive with FSD. Caveat being… with my car specifically, in this one single trip, with this particular 11.4.9 version of FSD and my specific FSD user settings, my impressions when comparing BAP to FSD….FSD will:
*Move over for lane-splitting bikers
*It’s better & more natural at protecting itself from other drivers changing into our lane
*Has Less phantom braking in the usual spots that trouble BAP
*Is Less intrusive/naggy in terms of wanting your full attention
*Is much better at recognizing when NOT to change lanes during a lane merger
*Better handle confusing freeway situations that have multiple freeway convergences & divergences
It was nearly flawless on, and moving through 3 different freeway stretches and only when the freeway got really twisty on the 110, did it start feeling a bit more robotic and less dialed in. The limited amount of time I had on surface streets with this trip as also pretty flawless. I’m impressed. It’s good!
0:00 - Intro
0:55 - Redeeming FSD from Tesla Mobile App
1:53 - FSD upgraded pushed to car already!
2:23 - Enabling FSD option for the first time and adjusting profile settings
3:40 - Upgrading to FSD did not reset Autopilot strikes!
11:20 - Engaging FSD for the first time!
13:02 - Initial impressions of visualization changes from AP to FSD
15:00 - FSD moves over for lane-splitting biker...good job!
22:30 - FSD doing a good job protecting itself from possible lane changer...felt natural
25:25 - FSD apparently does not visualize police vehicle w/ emergency lights on (this seems bad?)
26:43 - FSD makes its first mistake, trying to change into a lane that will end on an exit soon
28:30 - Makes up for it by (correctly) not changing into a lane where AP (wrongly) would have
31:10 - FSD is better at "preventing" phantom braking in an area that AP always gets wrong
33:20 - Another flawless handling of a lane merger
42:15 - FSD is noticeably less intrusive/naggy on wanting your full attention
48:53 - From here on out, FSD starts acing a series of freeway situation that tests its capabilities
52:40 - FSD initiates it's first auto-lane change but I freaked out and manually disengaged it (user error)
56:20 - FSD correctly navigates confusing lanes and nicely executes lane change!
58:50 - Smoothly handles lane merger, but follows it with a signal to lane change, before quickly aborting
1:00:25 - FSD shows it's strengths in navigating areas of freeway that are poorly marked and confusing (to human drivers) with multiple freeways converging/diverging
1:01:51 - Entering twisty 110 freeway where FSD begins to falter and feel robotic (mostly flawless up until this point)
1:07:18 - Successfully exits freeway on its own, beginning drive on surface streets
1:11:40 - FSD thinks about lane change but aborts it
1:13:20 - First successful lane change on surface streets - very nice! But brakes hard for a crosswalk that it shouldn't have.
1:15:40 - Final thoughts of my first drive with FSD!
