Full Lyrics to The Boar's Head Carol:
The boar's head in hand bear I,
Bedeck'd with bays and rosemary;
And I pray you, my masters, be merry,
Quod est in convivio. (Which is at the feast.)
Refrain:
Caput apri defero, (The boar's head I bring)
Reddens laudes Domino. (Giving praises to the Lord.)
The boar's head, as I understand,
Is the rarest thing in all this land,
Which thus bedeck'd with a gay garland
May be offered in lieu of Christ.
Refrain:
Caput apri defero,
Reddens laudes Domino.
Our steward hath provided this
In honour of the King of bliss;
Which on this day to serve is his
In regno Dei. (In the kingdom of God.)
Refrain:
Caput apri defero,
Reddens laudes Domino.
Origin: "The Boar's Head Carol" is the most famous English medieval carol that still survives today, celebrating the tradition of serving a boar's head as the centerpiece of the Christmas feast. It is deeply connected to Queen's College, Oxford University, where it is sung every year as the boar's head is ceremoniously brought into the dining hall. The earliest known printed version of the carol dates back to a 1521 collection by Wynkyn de Worde, but the oral tradition is much older, suggesting its origins lie in the 13th or 14th century. It is an example of a macaronic text, mixing Latin phrases with English, which was common in medieval hymns. Due to its great age and folk nature, the original author is Anonymous.
