It has almost 13000 permanent residents and its name derives from Aegina, the mother of the mythological #hero #Aeacus, who was born on the island and became its #king.
Two-thirds of its land consists of an extinct #volcano, while at its stony but fertile plains, vines, almonds, olives, figs and the characteristic #pistachio are being cultivated.

In antiquity, Aegina was competing with the neighbouring state of Athens over the sea power. During the Greek War of Independence, Aegina became an administrative centre for the Greek revolutionary authorities. Ioannis #Kapodistrias was briefly established here.

The island's main town, Aegina #town, reflects its long history, with a charming blend of neoclassical architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant waterfront #cafes.
