Genome editing is a fast-growing field that is poised to bring unprecedented disruption in medicine. Technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 have the capacity to redefine our future as humans. In this context, science diplomacy is called to play a pivotal role in discussing research, bioethics, and regulation of genome editing worldwide.

This session analysed the state of the art in the emerging global governance of human gene editing and how countries can develop governance frameworks and arrive at commonly agreed principles. Finally, it explored how science diplomacy can help build a common global interest in human gene editing applications.

 Introduction: Alexis Roig. Chief Executive Officer of SciTech DiploHub (Barcelona Science and Technology Diplomacy Hub), Professor at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST), and Affiliated Faculty at Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI).

 Luis Montoliu. Research scientist at the National Centre for Biotechnology (CNB-CSIC) and member of the Ethics Panel of ERC/H2020.

 Julian Kinderlerer. Emeritus Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the University of Cape Town and member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE).

 Sarah Chan. Chancellor's Fellow in Ethics and Science Communicator in The Usher Institute at the University of Edinburgh.

 Hervé Chneiweiss. Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Member of the WHO Expert Advisory Committee on Human Genome Editing.

 Moderator: Emma Martinez. Public Engagement Officer at the Babraham Institute and Project Officer for open experiments & co-creation in the ORION project.
