Global economies, politics and social attitudes were shifting again in the 1980s. US–Soviet relations struggled through the Cold War, and the AIDS epidemic put unprecedented pressure on public health.

The 80s were also a decade of great success and creativity. Keith Haring, John Hughes movies, breakdancing and the aerobics craze, for a start. Computer technology was progressing at an incredible rate, and a golden age of video gaming inspired everyone to dream of a more advanced future.

1980s fashion was eclectic and dramatic: permed hair, shoulder pads, chunky sweaters, off-the-shoulder tops, ruffled party dresses, neon colors, leg warmers and big statement earrings were all the rage.

As for makeup, the 80s brought a lot of intensity. Unlike the previous decade, face makeup went full-coverage. Blush was strong, applied in a hard line along the cheekbone. “I call it credit card blush,” says Scott.
