In this video, I’m showing you how to create awesome, ultra-realistic soft plastic fishing baits using 8Bit Bait Siren Scales, and a simple but powerful mold technique that gives your baits a true fish scale appearance—not just printed or surface-painted, but built directly into the bait itself.
The key to this process is applying Siren Scale flake onto a thin layer of clear plastisol that’s poured into a mold cavity designed with open pores on one side. These open pores allow the plastisol to slightly penetrate the mold surface, locking the scale pattern into the plastic instead of just sitting on top. This creates an incredibly realistic scale effect that reflects light just like real baitfish scales underwater.
To start, a thin coat of clear plastisol is poured into one half of the mold. While the plastisol is still hot and tacky, 8Bit Bait Siren Scales are carefully painted or dusted onto the surface. Because the plastisol layer is thin, the flake stays suspended right at the surface, creating sharp, clean scale definition without sinking too deep. Once that side sets, the same process is repeated on the other half of the mold cavity, ensuring both sides of the bait have consistent, natural-looking scales.
After both halves are prepped with clear plastisol and Siren Scales, the mold is closed and shot with a different plastisol color. This could be a solid baitfish tone, a translucent color, or even a layered blend depending on the look you’re going for. The result is a soft plastic bait with embedded scale detail that looks like it belongs on a real fish—not something painted on after the fact.
What makes this technique so effective is that the scales aren’t just cosmetic. Because they’re fused into the plastisol during the molding process, they won’t flake off, fade, or peel like surface-level paint jobs. The bait stays soft, flexible, and durable, while maintaining a high-end, custom appearance that stands out in the water and in your tackle box.
These baits shine especially well in clear to moderately stained water, where light reflection and realism can trigger more strikes. The Siren Scales catch and reflect light from multiple angles, mimicking the flash of fleeing baitfish and giving predatory fish something they can’t ignore.
If you’re into custom soft plastic bait making, this method opens the door to endless color combinations and scale patterns. Whether you’re making paddle tails, swimbaits, creature baits, or craws, this process can be adapted to almost any mold style with the right cavity texture.
This video breaks down the full process step-by-step—from plastisol prep, scale application, mold setup, and final injection—so both beginners and experienced bait makers can follow along. If you’re looking to take your bait game to the next level and create soft plastics that look as good as they fish, this technique using 8Bit Bait Siren Scales is a game changer.
