AIR CHECK: WODE May 27 2001 Summer Songs – Part # 12 of 12 featuring “Lover’s Gold”. This video features an audio digital restoration from cassette tapes recorded off the air by a listener, featuring a Memorial Day weekend “Summer Songs” edition of the Sunday Night Hall Of Fame Show. The show was broadcast on WODE “Oldies 99.9” from the Allentown – Bethlehem – Easton, PA area known as “The Lehigh Valley”, as recorded off the air by a listener to cassette tapes.
Artists and songs on this segment of the show include: Frankie Avalon – I’ll Wait For You and Brian Hyland “Sealed With A Kiss”, Phil Phillips and The Twilights classic “Sea Of Love”, Robin Ward with “Wonderful Summer”, The Tymes and their #1 hit “So Much In Love”. Then in my humble opinion, one of the greatest of all time by The Danleers followed by another Doo Wop classic by The Excellents.
I wrapped up this special “Summer Songs” edition of the show the way I was prone to do for decades on the radio, by spinning records by “The Big E and The Big O” back to back. That would of course be Elvis and Roy Orbison: this time it was “Summer Kisses, Winter Tears” and the incredible song by Orbison that was released by the Monument label throughout the years with song title variations: “Summersong”, “Our Summersong” and “Our Summer Song”.
BACK STORY: Digital restoration from cassette tapes, featuring a Memorial Day weekend “Summer Songs Special” of my Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show. Broadcast date: May 27, 2001 on WODE Oldies 99.9. Every year, my Memorial Day weekend special was always a favorite, and May 27, 2001, a listener was recording the show on tape. Many years later I received a copy of those tapes on one 90-minute and two 60-minute cassettes and decided to digitally restore them. There was a lot of tape hiss, drop outs, and some songs cut off or missing each time the tape had to be flipped over. Due to some of the degradation, I also digitally restored music that was partially missing or seriously impacted by tape issues.
The first time I recall featuring Summer Songs on Memorial Day Weekend was 1967. At that time I was the host of the nightly Rock and Soul show at WKAP AM 1320 AM in Allentown, PA., The rest of the day and overnight time slots were Pop/Easy Listening and call-in talk shows. During the 1950s and 1960s, WKAP always battled it out for the #1 ratings position with the full time Rock station, WAEB AM 790.
One of the WKAP’s most popular radio personalities was Paul Galgon. Except for my nightly show, Paul was responsible for music programming. I remember asking Paul if he would mind if I had a special “Summer Songs” night during the Memorial Day weekend. He said he did not mind “as long as you play Nat King Cole”. Paul was of course referring to Cole’s two summertime hits from 1963. I told him I would, and I did. Those two songs that Galgon had requested are both on this WODE Memorial Day weekend special, as I continued to play them on the air for decades after.
I hope you enjoy this restoration of a special Memorial Day weekend edition of the Sunday Night Hall of Fame on WODE – Oldies 99.9
Music in this video, which I produced, features my original radio broadcast from May 27, 2001 on WODE Oldies 99.9 FM, Easton, Pa. I was a contract employee of WODE: writing, producing and hosting The Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show.
