San Francisco native plants include gorgeous colorful plants that evolved in and are adapted to our varied soils and our variable weather. These plants also bring color to our gardens by attracting and feeding beautiful butterflies that co-evolved for their caterpillars to eat the leaves of these beautiful plants. We’ll discuss what to plant in San Francisco to get colorful blooms throughout the year, including shallow rooted plants that thrive in containers, pots and window boxes.
Susan Karasoff gardens in San Francisco’s clay soil. Karasoff is a member of the California Native Plant Society - Yerba Buena (San Francisco) chapter. Susan has an “only the easiest plants survive” approach to gardening. Susan grows a buffet of colorful native edible and pollinator plants, specifically gardening to feed caterpillars and bees.
