Thakurani Jatra, Berhampur – A Festival of Devotion and Color
Thakurani Jatra is one of the most vibrant and culturally rich festivals celebrated in Berhampur (Brahmapur), Odisha. Held every 2–3 years, this grand event is dedicated to Maa Budhi Thakurani, the presiding deity of the town. The festival lasts for over a month and transforms the entire city into a hub of devotion, tradition, and celebration.
The origin of Thakurani Jatra dates back over 300 years when the weaving community of Berhampur (the Dera community) initiated the celebration to honor their deity. The highlight of the festival is the symbolic visit of Maa Budhi Thakurani to her "paternal home," during which a temporary temple (ghara) is built in the heart of the city.
During the Jatra, the streets are filled with people dressed in vibrant costumes, with many men and children participating in fancy dress as mythological characters, tigers, and folk heroes. Traditional music, dance, and processions create a festive atmosphere. Temporary markets, food stalls, and cultural events make it a city-wide carnival.
Thakurani Jatra is not just a religious event but a celebration of community bonding, local culture, and heritage. It reflects the spirit of unity and devotion of the people of Berhampur.
